Question

Two student performed the same experiment separately and each one of them recorded two readings of mass which are given below. Correct reading of mass is $$3.0\ g$$. One the basis of given data, mark the correct option out of the following statement.
StudentReading
$$A$$$$3.01\quad 2.99$$
$$B$$$$3.05\quad 2.95$$

A
Results of both the students are neither accurate nor precise.
B
Results of students $$B$$ are neither precise and nor accurate.
C
Results of students $$A$$ are both precise and accurate.
D
Results of students $$B$$ are both precise and accurate.
Solution

Correct option is B. Results of students $$A$$ are both precise and accurate.
Students $$A$$:
Average reading $$=\dfrac{3.01+2.99}{2}=3.0g$$
Student $$B$$: Average reading $$=\dfrac{3.05+2.95}{2}=3.0g$$
For both the students $$A$$ and $$B$$, average reading is close to the correct reading $$(i.e.,3.0g)$$. Hence, both recorded by student $$A$$ are more precise as they differ only by $$\pm 0.01$$, whereas readings recorded by the student $$B$$ are differ by $$\pm 0.05$$. Thus, the results of student $$A$$ are both precise and accurate.

Precision refers to the closeness of various measurements for the same quantity and accuracy is the agreement of a perticular value to the true value of the results. Results of student $$A$$ are very close to $$3g$$.
