The left plate produces a field (σ2ϵ0) which points away from it to the left in the region (i) and to the right in region (ii) and (iii). The right plate being negatively charged, produces a field (σ2ϵ0) which points towards it to the right in regions (i) and (ii) and to the left in the region (iii). The 2 fields cancel in region (i) and (iii); they add in region (ii). Thus the field between the plates is σε0 and elsewhere, 0.
