Question

Two transparent media of refractive indices μ1 and μ3 have a solid lens shaped transparent material of refractive index μ2 between them as shown in figures in Column II. A ray traversing these media is also shown in the figures. In Column I different relationship between μ1,μ2 and μ3 are given. Match them to the ray diagram shown in Column II.

Solution

(A) μ1<μ2
Since there are multiple systems & combination given.SO if μ1<μ2,Then convex surface will behave converging & concave surface will behave diverging at that interface ,which can be observed in 1&3.
(B) μ1>μ2
if μ1>μ2 then convex surface will behave diverging & concave surface will coverge the rays which can be observed 2,4,5
(C) If μ2=μ3, then there will be no deviation in the light ray.At the interface of μ2&μ3.Which can be observed in 1,3 &5.
(D)If μ2>μ3 then convex surface will behave converging & concave surface will behave diverging.
