Doctrine of Lapse was an annexation policy purportedly used by Lord Dalhousie as per which any princely state or territory under the British East India Company would automatically be annexed if the ruler died without a male heir. It was also applied to Jhansi when its ruler Raja Gangadhar Rao died without a natural heir and the British refused to recognize his adopted son as his heir.
