Pleiotropic gene is the gene which is responsible for the expression of more than one gene and thus shows variation in phenotypes of an individual. These genes when mutated may cause defects in more than one trait of an organism and thus results in severe disease. Some of the examples of pleiotropic genes are sickle-cell anemia, phenylketonuria etc.
