Question

What is dispersion of white light? What is the cause of such dispersion? Draw a diagram to show the dispersion of white light by a glass prism.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

The splitting up of white light into seven colours on passing through a transparent medium like a glass prism is called dispersion of light.

Cause of dispersion of light:
When light passes through a prism, the different frequencies of light travel at different velocities. Because of refraction, the different velocities make the angles of refraction different, causing the light to travel in slightly different directions.

The diagram demonstrating the dispersion of white light by a glass prism is shown.

State the cause of dispersion of white light by glass prism. How did Newton, using two identical glass prisms show that white light is made of seven colours? Draw a ray diagram to show the path of a narrow beam of white light, through combination of two identical prisms (where one of the prism is in an inverted position with respect to the other), when it is allowed to fall obliquely on one of the face of the first prism of the combination.
