Peitra dura refers to the coloured, hard stones placed in depressions carved into marble or sandstone which create beautiful ornate patterns. It flourished in Florence particularly in the late 16th and 17th centuries. A beautiful and famous example of pietra dura is the Taj Mahal, finished in 1643.
