Question

What is pyrolysis or cracking? Explain with example.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

The decomposition of a compound by heat in the absence of air is called Pyrolysis. When pyrolysis occurs in alkanes, the process is termed as cracking.

For example:
Alkanes on heating under high temperature or in the presence of a catalyst in absence of air broken down into lower alkanes, alkenes and hydrogen.

$$C_3H_8\xrightarrow{higher\ temp} C_2H_4+CH_4$$

What does this mean "The process of heating higher alkanes to sufficiently high temperatures in absence of oxygen, in order to obtain lower hydrocarbons is known as cracking or pyrolysis.
For example, n - hexadecane on heating cracks into n-octane and octene (an alkene)."

Pyrolysis (Greek, Pyro = fire, Lysis = loosening), is thermal breakage of organic molecules and when the process is applied to higher alkanes .it is called cracking (a word given by petroleum industry). The product is in the form of a mixture containing alkanes (n1) to CH4, [where n=number of C atoms present in alkene undergone pyrolysis], alkenes (n to CH2=CH2, all possible alkenes) and H2, e.g ,
