Question

What is the correct increasing order of solubility of the following salt?

NaHCO3, KHCO3, Mg(HCO3)2, Ca(HCO3)2

  1. Ca(HCO3)2<NaHCO3<KHCO3<Mg(HCO3)2
  2. KHCO3<Mg(HCO3)2<Ca(HCO3)2<NaHCO3
  3. Mg(HCO3)2<Ca(HCO3)2<NaHCO3<KHCO3
  4. NaHCO3<KHCO3<Mg(HCO3)2<Ca(HCO3)2

A
Ca(HCO3)2<NaHCO3<KHCO3<Mg(HCO3)2
B
KHCO3<Mg(HCO3)2<Ca(HCO3)2<NaHCO3
C
NaHCO3<KHCO3<Mg(HCO3)2<Ca(HCO3)2
D
Mg(HCO3)2<Ca(HCO3)2<NaHCO3<KHCO3
Solution
Verified by Toppr

In the give metal bicarbonates, the anion (bicarbonate ion) is the same. Hence the solubility will depend on the size of cation. The size of Na+ ion is smaller than that of K+ ion. Hence sodium bicarbonate has high lattice energy and lower solubility than potassium bicarbonate. Similarly, the size of Mg+ ion is smaller than that of Ca+ ion. Hence magnesium bicarbonate has high lattice energy and lower solubility than calcium bicarbonate.
Hence, the correct option is (C)
