Question

What is the measured component of the orbital magnetic dipole moment of an electron with (a)$$m_l=1$$ and (b)$$m_l=-2$$?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

As we know,
We use : $$μ_{orb, z} = – m_l μ_B$$.
(a) For $$m_l = 1$$, $$μ_{orb,z} = –(1) (9.3 \times 10^{–24}\, J/T) = –9.3 \times 10^{–24}\, J/T$$.
(b) For $$m_l = -2$$, $$μ_{orb,z} = –(-2) (9.3 \times 10^{–24}\, J/T) = 1.9 \times 10^{–23}\, J/T$$.
