Question

Which of the following alcohols will dehydrate most rapidly when treated with conc. H2SO4?
  1. CH3CH(OH)C(CH3)3
  2. (CH3)2CHCH(OH)CH3
  3. CH3CH2CH2CH2OH
  4. CH3C(CH3)(OH)CH(CH3)2

A
CH3CH(OH)C(CH3)3
B
CH3CH2CH2CH2OH
C
CH3C(CH3)(OH)CH(CH3)2
D
(CH3)2CHCH(OH)CH3
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The speed of dehydration will be proportional to the stability of carbo-cation formed after the protonated OH group leaves.

Thus for option (B), the carbo-cation would be (in the figure).

This is the most stable carbo-cation since it is on a 3° carbon. The reaction will proceed big E1 mechanism.

Therefore, option B is correct.
