Question

Which of the following are correct for insulators?
  1. The valence band is partially filled with electrons.
  2. The conduction band is partially filled with electrons.
  3. The conduction band is partially filled with electrons and valence band is empty.
  4. The conduction band is empty and the valence band is filled with electrons.

A
The conduction band is partially filled with electrons and valence band is empty.
B
The conduction band is partially filled with electrons.
C
The conduction band is empty and the valence band is filled with electrons.
D
The valence band is partially filled with electrons.
Solution

In insulators, the electrons are very tightly bound to the nucleus. At a room temperature, thermal energy is not enough to push electrons into conduction band. The energy band gap is very high. Thus the conduction band is empty and the valence band is filled with electrons.

Assertion :In some solids, the valence band is completely filled while the next higher band separated by an energy gap of few electrons-volts is completely empty. Reason: In insulators the energy band completely filled with electrons( the valence band) and above it is empty band (the conduction band)

Assertion :We kn ow that a conduction band is an empty band just above the valence band into which electrons can pass. Reason: In conductors , the valence band is itself the conduction band.

Q4
Assertion :If there is some gap between the conduction band and the valence band, electrons in the valence band all remain bound, and no free electrons are available in the conduction band. Reason: Some of the electrons in the valence band may gain external energy to cross trhe gap between the conduction band and the valence band.
