The World Trade Organization (WTO) deals with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible. Afghanistan became the 164th member of the World Trade Organization on 29 July 2016. Afghanistan applied for WTO membership in 2004. WTO approved Afghanistan’s membership proposal at its 10th ministerial conference in the Nairobi, Kenya. By joining WTO, landlocked war-shattered Afghanistan hopes to reap the benefits of the WTO membership for its post-conflict reconstruction.
