In Gupta period, a Samanta was a neighbouring subsidiary ruler who was a friendly tributary of the Gupta overlords. They usually did not challenge the authority of the Gupta monarch. This was usually done by the powerful Brahmanas, guilds comprising of wealthy merchants and traders as well as the ministers in the Gupta Empire.
