The molecule laminarin is a storage glucan (a polysaccharide of glucose) found in brown algae. It is used as a carbohydrate food reserve.
Inulin is a water soluble fructosan having 25 to 35 units of β-linked fructose with commonly glucose residues at one end. Inulin is quite a common reserve food in members of family Compositae.
Alkaloids are bitter tasting nitrogenous by-products, often poisonous and with medicinal properties, e.g., Nicotine found in leaves of Nicotiana tabacum.
Resins are acidic oxidation products of essential oils which are insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol or turpentine. Pine resin and Canada balsam are oleoresins, i.e., resin with associated essential oils. Resins are not a characteristic of dicots only.
