Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids are the biomolecules of living systems. Carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids are macromolecular formed of multiple units of monomers whereas lipids are not macromolecules. Carbohydrates can also occur in monomer which is single unit form. Carbohydrates provide energy. Proteins are body building molecules, lipids act as long term storage of energy, formation of hormones, forming membrane lipids etc. Nucleic acids are repository of genetic information.
