Question

Which of the following reagent is used in the isomerisation of alkanes?
  1. LiAlH4
  2. Anhy. AlCl3/HCl gas
  3. Cu/300oC
  4. V2O5/500oC

A
LiAlH4
B
Anhy. AlCl3/HCl gas
C
V2O5/500oC
D
Cu/300oC
Solution

Process of conversion of one isomer into another is called isomerisation, in this process AlCl3+HCl is used as catalyst under high temp. and pressure.

In isomerisation n-alkanes on heating in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 and HCl gas isomerise to branched-chain alkanes.
