Question

Which of the following statements about the composition of the vapour over an ideal 1:1 molar mixture of benzene and toluene is correct? Assume that the temperature is constant 25C. (Given Vapour Pressure Data at 25C, benzene =12.8 kPa, toluene =3.85 kPa)
  1. The vapour will contain a higher percentage of benzene
  2. The vapour will contain a equal amount of benzene and toulene
  3. The vapour will contain a higher percentage of toulene
  4. Not enough information is given to make a prediction

A
The vapour will contain a higher percentage of toulene
B
Not enough information is given to make a prediction
C
The vapour will contain a equal amount of benzene and toulene
D
The vapour will contain a higher percentage of benzene
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Abenzene,Btoluene

In 1:1 molar mixture of A and B

XA=12,XB=12

P=PoAXA+PoBXB

P=12.8×12+3.85×12=8.325 kPa

YA=PoAXAP=12.8×128.325=0.768

YB=1YA=1.0.768=0.232

So the vapour will contain higher percentage of benzene.

Option A is correct.
