Question

Which of the following statement(s) is (are) correct?
  1. The rest mass of a stable nucleus is greater than the sum of the rest masses of its separated nucleons
  2. The rest mass of a stable nucleus is less than the sum of the rest masses of its separated nucleons
  3. In nuclear fission, energy is released by fusing two nuclei of medium mass (approximately 100 a.m.u.)
  4. In nuclear fission, energy is released by fragmentation of a very heavy nucleus

A
In nuclear fission, energy is released by fusing two nuclei of medium mass (approximately 100 a.m.u.)
B
The rest mass of a stable nucleus is greater than the sum of the rest masses of its separated nucleons
C
The rest mass of a stable nucleus is less than the sum of the rest masses of its separated nucleons
D
In nuclear fission, energy is released by fragmentation of a very heavy nucleus
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The rest mass of a stable nucleus is always less than the sum of rest masses of it's constituents and the difference is called the mass defect Δm.
Δmc2 is used in keeping nucleons bounded.
This is called binding energy.

Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of heavy atoms splits into two or more lighter nuclei. This fission process oftenly produces gamma photons.

Assertion :The rest mass energy of a nucleus is smaller than the rest mass energy of its constituent nucleons in free state. Reason: Nucleons are bound together in a nucleus, due to the binding energy between them.
