Anabaena is a cyanobacteria, so it is autotrophic. It is a nitrogen-fixing filamentous cyanobacterium that lives freely in most waters and moist habitats. It also occurs as a symbiont in Azolla (a water fern) and cycad roots. The filaments may be straight or coiled. The cells are moniliform. Heterocysts do not possess mucilage covering.
