Which one of the following statements is correct?
  1. The catalyst can not start a chemical reaction
  2. A catalyst only accelerates the rate of a chemical reaction
  3. The catalyst can retard the rate of a chemical reaction
  4. The catalyst can control the rate of a reaction

A
The catalyst can not start a chemical reaction
B
The catalyst can retard the rate of a chemical reaction
C
A catalyst only accelerates the rate of a chemical reaction
D
The catalyst can control the rate of a reaction
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Catalyst generally can not start a reaction but they can change the speed of the reaction. A catalyst is a substance which speeds up a reaction but is chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction. When the reaction has finished, we should have exactly the same mass of catalyst as we had in the beginning.
