Question

Which one of the following statements is not correct?
  1. The bond angle of COH in methanol is 108.9o.
  2. Carbon-oxygen bond length in methanol, CH3OH is shorter than that of CO bond length in phenol.
  3. Acid strength of alcohols decreases in the following order: RCH2OH>R2CHOH>R3COH
  4. Alcohols are weaker acids than water.

A
Carbon-oxygen bond length in methanol, CH3OH is shorter than that of CO bond length in phenol.
B
Alcohols are weaker acids than water.
C
Acid strength of alcohols decreases in the following order: RCH2OH>R2CHOH>R3COH
D
The bond angle of COH in methanol is 108.9o.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

i) The bond angle is not standard tetrahedral angle because oxygen has two lone pairs on it, which repels carbon and hydrogen and hence decreases the bond angle.

ii) Alcohols are weaker acids than water that can be seen from the Ka values.

iii) Carbon-oxygen bond length in methanol CH3OH is longer than that of CO bond length in phenol because of the resonance occurs in phenol.

iv) As alkyl groups add on, the acidity decreases owing to the +I effect of alkyl groups.

Option C is correct.
