(v) Phylogenetic relationships
  • In the five-kingdom classification, living beings are classified into the following five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
  • Unicellular algae are kept in kingdom Protista, whereas algae-like multicellular organisms are kept in kingdom Plantae and blue-green algae are part of Monera kingdom. But similar organisms must be put together.
  • Hence, placing algae into different kingdoms is considered a shortcoming of the five-kingdom classification.
