Black Towns were established by the European companies within the new cities. The “blacks” or native traders, merchants, artisans (such as weavers) native traders and craftspersons lived in the 'Black Towns', while the “white” rulers occupied the superior residencies of Fort St George in Madras or Fort St William in Calcutta.
