Why is tank irrigation more popular in peninsular India?
- Irrigation is the artificial supply of water mainly for
agriculture. Tank is a source of irrigation where water is stored in artificially
constructed reservoirs of any size. Often a tank is constructed across a slope
so to collect and store water by taking advantage of local mounds and
depressions.
- Tank irrigation is more popular in south India because rainfall
is followed by a very dry season. There is no continuous rain. Hence, there is a
need to preserve rainwater.
- Apart from this, relief is undulating and presence of hard
rocks in peninsular India make it difficult to dig canals. So tank irrigation
is preferred.
