Question

Why is the focal point for any convex lens a little inexact with ordinary white light?
  1. White light has a very long wavelength, compared to other colors.
  2. White light has a very short wavelength, compared to other colors.
  3. White light bends more than all the other colors.
  4. White light is made up of colors of light, which bend different amounts as they pass through the lens.
  5. White light bends less than all the other colors.

A
White light has a very long wavelength, compared to other colors.
B
White light has a very short wavelength, compared to other colors.
C
White light bends less than all the other colors.
D
White light is made up of colors of light, which bend different amounts as they pass through the lens.
E
White light bends more than all the other colors.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The focal length of a convex lens is given by
1f=(nmaterialnmedium1)(2R)
Since the refractive index of material is different for different colours, the focal length of the lens is different for them. Hence the constituents of white light bend by different amounts.

A parallel beam of white light falls on a combination of a concave and a convex lens, both of the same material. Their focal lengths are 15 cm and 30 cm, respectively for the mean wavelength in white light. On the other side of the lens system, one sees colored patterns with violet color at the outer edge.
