Attached picture shows the difference between the real depth and apparent depth of the object under water.

We can see that objects closer than their real depth to the surface only if the rays coming from them reach our eyes. In this picture, ray coming from the coin reaches the observer’s eye after refraction and so observer sees the image of the coin at the distance D from the surface which is the apparent depth of the coin which is the result of the refraction of light.
