Question

Write the decay equations and expressions for the disintegration energy Q of the following decay: β decay, β+ decay, electron capture

Solution
Verified by Toppr

In all the cases discussed here, we neglect any neutrino mass.
βdecay:Mnucl(AZX)=Mnucl)AZ+1D)+me+Q/c2
where, Mnucl indicates the nuclear mass.
In order to convert it to atomic mass, we add Zme on both sides:
Mnucl(AZX)+Zme=Mnucl(AZ+1D)+(Z+1)me+Q/c2
Since atomic binding energies are less than nuclear binding energies, they are neglected on the two sides of the equation.
[M(AZX)=M(AZ+1D)]c2
Q for this equation =[M(AZX)=M(AZ+1D)]c2
β+decay:Mnucl(AZX)=Mnucl(AZ1D)+me+Q/c2
In this case, only (Z-1)m is needed for the daughter atomic mass which gives us a remaining mass of 2me.
[M(AZX)M(AZ1D)2me]c2
Q for this equation =[M(AZX)M(AZ1D)2me]c2
We add (Z1)me to each side above and obtain:
Mnucl(AZX)+Zme=Mnucl(AZ1D)+(Z1)me+Q/c2
In this case, electron masses are balanced, i.e, cancelled out in equation:
M(AZX)M(AZ1D)+Q/c2
Q for this equation =[M(AZX)M(AZ1D)]c2
