When phenol reacts with chloroform in the presence of bases $$(NaOH/KOH)$$, an aldehyde $$(-CHO)$$ group gets introduced in the ring at a position ortho to the phenolic group and salicylaldehyde is formed. This reaction is called the Reimer-Tiemann reaction.
