Question

Write true or false for the following statements :
A solution of an ionic compound in water contains ions , which move to the opposite electrodes when electricity is passed through the solution.

A
True
B
False
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Correct option is A. True
Let's take an example of $$NaCl_{aq}$$. Now, when we pass electricity to the solution, the $$NaCl$$ atoms split up into $$Na^+$$ and $$Cl^-$$.the Na ions are attracted to the negative electrode (opposite charges attract) i.e. the cathode and Cl ions are attracted to the positive electrode i.e. the anodes. Similarly even water gets split into $$H^+$$and $${O_2}^{-}$$ . $$H$$ ions move to cathode and $$O$$ ions move to anode
