Every college comes with a uniqueness. Unique in the sense of culture and programmes offered by the campuses. Let’s have a look at a few things that are unique to BITS. To give a brief introduction about BITS, Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university.

The university has 15 academic departments, and focuses primarily on undergraduate education in engineering and the sciences. It is widely known as the best private engineering institute of India. BITS has established four campuses spread over a vast expanse in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.

Well, there are 3 things that are ‘different’ about BITS:
1. No attendance policy – This is a standing rule at BITS. Students have no compulsion to go to classes, with the exception of a few compulsory labs. The college firmly believes that students should be free to pursue knowledge independently of what is taught in the classroom. This allows students to pursue other avenues of knowledge and entirely different streams. It’s not uncommon to find a mechanical engineering major who knows more about computer science than his CS counterparts.
2. Practice School – Internships are often not compulsory in colleges. It’s great if you get work experience through an internship during college, but again, it is not a requirement for graduation itself. BITS recognizes the importance of practical work experience and incorporates 8 – 14 months of guaranteed internship for all it’s students through the Practice School program. The Practice School program is broken down into Practice School courses which must be taken by a student during his time at college. This involves spending a semester (or two) off campus interning for a company (of your choice usually) with the college catering for your accommodation. BITS has tie ups with a lot of companies for this very purpose and often companies even hire students right out of Practice School.
3. Make your own timetable – BITS allows student to structure their timetable around their personal lifestyles. You can pick teachers and subject time slots based on personal preference. During a semester multiple teachers offer the same course and the student is free to pick any of the teachers and their offered time slot. This means that if you’re a late riser you can potentially take classes offered later during the day for your semester’s subjects, or if you like your classes to have breaks in the middle you can do that, or if you hate Monday labs you can take Wednesday labs and so on.
