Enough has already been said and written in the praise of the books Dr. H.C.Verma writes, namely Concepts of Physics. This H.C.Verma’s set of books serves as a stepping stone to the stairway to success. While all of us are well aware of its importance in preparation for JEE and how indispensable it is, are you sure that you are making optimum utilization of its content while on the JEE road?
The idea of Concepts of Physics cropped up within Dr. H.C.Verma while he was a lecturer at Patna Science College when he realized that many Indian students fail to grasp the actual concepts of books like those of Resnick Halliday with tough language. This disparity of language led to a severe loss of time and half-understood concepts above that. H.C.Verma’s ‘Concepts of Physics’ is the most ethnic book available in the country for Physics which treats local examples to students along with simple language. But then again, is this book solely sufficient for a perfect JEE score? We answer all these questions:
TO START WITH: The books by H.C.Verma are perfect for any student aspiring to crack JEE to especially build a conceptual base. For assurance, it can be easily said that no other book is required for the same. It is strictly advised that only when you are done with Concepts of Physics by H.C.Verma, should you move ahead to refer other books. No other writer plays with force between a horse and a cart in a better way!
ARE THE CHAPTERS ORDER-INDEPENDENT? No. Seriously, no. While Chemistry’s rich content has chapters which can stand out for themselves, reading chapters of Physics in a random order is similar to solving an equation of ellipse without understanding the Cartesian co-ordinates. H.C.Verma has laid out all the chapters in a very specific order which are required to be studied in the same way because the concepts keep building up and the further you venture into chapters, more are the previous concepts put to use.
IS THE BOOK SOLELY SUFFICIENT? Again, no. While we have advised you to begin your journey with H.C.Verma, it is not advised to be content with it. Although the H.C.Verma book brings a truckload of numericals with itself, from JEE point of view, it is not sufficient. The MCQs, on the other hand, are very well designed to tackle specific loopholes students have in the concepts they build after going through the chapter. The friction problems on ice got some of us racking our brains for hours:
But H.C.Verma book is only efficient in providing you a concrete base and it is advised that after you are done with that, you must practice more numericals from other books, practice papers, or previous years’ question papers.
IS THE BOOK ACTUALLY DESIGNED FOR JEE? Dr. H.C.Verma wrote this book only for Indian students to get a better grasp of the subject and take interest in it and that purpose was served. While the book was not written to crack JEE, the aspiring students have been using this book for the past two decades. But when you go through previous years’ question papers, you will find that the question pattern is altogether different. JEE carefully designs questions so that only the thorough minds will be able to crack the code. So, no, the book is not aimed at JEE but with its concepts, you can easily start practising questions of various formats, such as multiple answer correct, matrix match or paragraph questions.
Books are many and knowledge is infinite. With limited time, focused and efficient study is very important. Go for the right advice and come out with flying colours. All the best!
