Assessment Strategies

Assessment strategies are methods used by teachers to collect data about students. The main assessment strategies are as follows:

Observation- Here the teachers observe the students. Teachers focus on one individual or the group as a whole. Teachers understand the behavior, skill, and attitude of a student by carefully observing him.

Performance Assessment- Here teachers give students tasks similar to real-life tasks. Students must use skills and knowledge to complete these tasks. It involves a realistic setting because of adult life scenario

Open-Ended Assessment- The students in this strategy try to give an original response to a challenge because this response should be unique. Teacher makes this challenge and poses it to the student.

Selected Response Assessment- These tests take place on a single occasion. They show a student’s knowledge about something specific.

Portfolios- This is another strategy in which collection of a student’s work happens in an organized manner. This is a continuous process and it shows the growth of the student.

Assessment Tools

Rubrics- These are sets of criteria used for rating student’s performance. Both the teachers and students can make rubrics.

Benchmarks- Benchmarks are samples of a student’s work. It is the standard to judge other student samples.

Checklists- These are lists which contain information, attributes, and skills of students.

Anecdotal Records- These are brief, written notes about students after observing them. The notes are nicely organized and then analyzed.

Continuums-The early stages of learning appear in a visual manner and these representations are continuums. Hence they show where a student is in a process.
