Best Reference Books for Biology for all Exams:
As with any entrance examination, preparation is the key to success. Selecting and buying the relevant books forms the basic requirement. While the 3 basic sciences such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology are equally important, in this segment, we shall look at Biology alone.
Begin by deciding which entrance you want to start preparing for. There are entrances such as AIIMS, NEET, JIPMER etc., for getting into the medical field and each have their own syllabus for the entrance. While the overall syllabus might vary slightly, the basics remain the same. So the ground rule is to learn the basics thoroughly. Trueman’s Elementary Biology (volumes I & II) will be useful in brushing up the basics.
Once you equip yourself with the fundamentals, go on to learning based on the common questions that are mostly asked in the previous year examinations. Revision of the previous years’ questions aids to a great extent since it gives the aspirants a better understanding of what kind of questions they would have to face in the upcoming entrance. Arihant’s Question Banks are the go to when it comes to revision of previous years’ questions.
The other set of good reference books for biology, which will help lay a strong foundation, are the following:
- NCERT Biology of Class XI and XII

These books help you prepare depending on the entrance you wish to take up.
While books aid to a certain extent, the basic inputs such as hard work, dedication and determination are requirements from the students’ end. Furthermore, you need to concentrate on your basic sciences right from standard VIII if your ultimate goal is to land a career in medicine. Studying day and night a week before the exams will not help (unless you are superman!). So decide well ahead where you want to be and what you want to do and work towards it. The journey may be long and tiring but you can be rest assured of a happy ending.
Remember your promise to yourselves and have a great future ahead!
