What is BITSAT?

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani organises the BITSAT examination to provide admissions to UG and PG courses to the various campuses of BITS. BITSAT is your gateway to admissions in the three BITS campuses i.e. BITS Pilani Campus, K.K. Birla Goa Campus, and the Hyderabad Campus. Held during the month of May every year, this prestigious BITSAT examination is conducted through a Computer-Based Test (CBT).

Can I appear for BITSAT 2017?

• Applicants should have passed 12th or equivalent exam (from any state or central board) with 75% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics/Biology. They also should have scored 60% marks separately in each of the three subjects. Proficiency in English is another prerequisite to apply for BITSAT 2017.
• Candidates who have passed 12th or equivalent exam in 2015 or earlier are not eligible to apply for BITSAT 2017.
• Candidates aspiring to take admission in B. Tech and B. Pharm. must have passed 12th with Maths and Biology respectively.
• If you have attempted the class 12 examination more than once then, you will be ranked according to your latest performance.
• Students already studying in any of the BITS campuses will not be allowed to take BITSAT 2017 again.
• Top rankers or candidates with Rank 1 in the central or state boards in India will be offered admissions to the programs of their choice, irrespective of their score/rank in BITSAT 2017, but they must meet the Eligibility Criteria as mentioned earlier.

How do I register for BITSAT 2017?

The BITSAT 2017 Application Form will be tentatively available from the last week of December 2017. After that, you may apply for the test from the official website. Please follow these simple steps to register yourself for BITSAT 2017.

Please note that the BITSAT 2017 Application Form will be available only in the online mode and in the second week of January 2017. Before starting with the Application Form procedure, you need to keep the following things handy.

• Your 12th standard qualification details
• Your Permanent Address
• A valid E-Mail Id & Phone Number
• Credit Card/ Debit Card/ Net Banking Login id & Password (For Online Mode of Payment)
• Confirmation Receipt of Pay-in-slip (for Offline Mode of Payment)

You can follow these steps to fill up the BITSAT 2017 application form.

• Visit the BITSAT 2017 official website and click on ‘Apply here for BITSAT 2017’.
• Read instructions on the page carefully and click on ‘Allow me to Apply Online’ tab.
• Enter your basic details such as Name, Gender, DOB and a valid E-mail id for registration and click on the ‘Proceed’ tab.
• Next, you’re required to enter your parents’ name, nationality, and complete address along with a mobile number. Furthermore, you will be asked to enter your 12th examination details (Name of Institute, Board, Year of passing, etc.).
• Now, you need to enter your choice of Preferred Test Centres. You can choose the centres from within India or Dubai. If you select centres within India, you will be asked to give three preferences and one out of the three will be allotted to you. If you choose Dubai as a centre you won’t be asked for any preferences, and the Dubai Centre will be allotted to you.
• Once you’re done, click on the SUBMIT tab. You will be asked to verify all the details and confirm your submission.
• Once you submit your BITSAT 2017 application form, the system will generate a Unique Registration Number for you. Note down this number as it will be required for all future references. If you do not have a printer attached to the computer while filling your online application, you can complete the application process and take the printout of the application form later by entering your personal details and the application number.
• Now, comes the payment part. You can choose to pay through the offline mode i.e. via ICICI Bank Challan payment or through the online mode i.e. Credit Card, Debit Card or Net Banking. According to your choice, you will be directed to the payment gateway.
• Please note that if you choose centres within India, the Application Fee for male candidates is Rs.2200/- and for female candidates is Rs.1700/-. If you choose Dubai as your test centre, then the Application Fee for both male and female candidates is US$50.
• After completing the online BITSAT 2017 Application Form, you will be asked to take printouts of the filled form. You should take two copies of the printout and keep them with you for future reference.
• Once the application form process is complete, please keep checking the BITSAT Application Form Status to ensure that your application request has been acknowledged.
• If you discover any mistake in the Application form that you’ve submitted, you can edit or correct the form details till the first week of March 2017.

In case you choose to pay through the online mode i.e. Credit Card/ Debit Card or Net Banking, keep the following points in mind to avoid any confusion at a later stage.

• The BITS server does not collect any information on your credit card details such as credit card number, expiry date, etc.
• If the payment is successful and BITS receives the amount, when you log into BITS admission website next time, you will be taken to the print page wherein you can print the application form along with the payment receipt.
• During the payment process, if the link fails to open or if you receive any error messages, you are advised to re-login to the BITS Admission website with your personal details and application number. If BITS has not received the money, you will be taken to the page wherein you have to select the payment method and continue once again. If the payment is already received, you will be taken to the printout page as explained above.
• While applying online, do not use the ‘Back’ button on the toolbar of your browser.Use the links and tabs available on the page to move from one page to another. Further, when you have completed applying, close all the open browser windows for safety purposes.

What is the BITSAT 2017 exam pattern? 

• BITSAT 2017 will be conducted through Online Mode (Computer Based Exam).
• The exam duration will be 3 hours.
• The question paper will comprise of 150 objective-type questions (Multiple Choice Questions).
• Each correct answer fetches three marks, while one mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
• The candidates may choose to skip a question, but the computer will not allow the candidates to choose more than one option as the correct answer.
• The question paper will have four sections with marks assigned to them in the following fashion.

• If a candidate finishes attempting all 150 questions before time has ended, he/she will get to attempt 12 BONUS questions. These questions will have a +3, -1 marking scheme just like the rest of the paper.
  Note, however, that the candidate won’t be allowed to access the earlier 150 questions if he/she decides to attempt bonus questions.

How should I prepare? [POINTERS AND TEXT]

• Shorter but Trickier questions:

While gearing up for BITSAT 2016, don’t waste time solving lengthier questions, but root for questions which are more concept based. You must have all formulas and equations (algebraic and chemical alike) on your fingertips. Know that almost seventy percent of the question paper is formula based.

• Strenuous time management:

The most important out of all the BITSAT tips and tricks is and most efficient is time management. Only those who are able to solve questions accurately and quickly are the ones who grab the baton. You need to put yourself through a taxing mock routine for practicing time management and enhance your solving speed. Secondly, subject yourself to mock tests for practice. The more you practice, the more you will observe an increasing graph of your score. In the process, try to reduce errors in your calculation to avoid the scope for revision during examination.

• Dividing time for separate questions:

Of the three hours of the examination, spend no more than half an hour on chemistry so that you can devote more time to other sections. Since mathematics is time consuming, it may eat up as much as sixty to eighty minutes; the rest being saved for Physics, English and Logical Reasoning. Questions pertaining to English and Logical Reasoning do not require calculation but only analysis. Hence, these together should not be allowed more than thirty to forty five minutes of your time.

• Give English its credit

Carrying 15 questions, English must be mastered well, given the cut throat competition in BITSAT exam. You should keep in touch slightly with easy grammar rules well before the examination, preferably along with your preparation. For Verbal/Logical sections, try to practice and prepare from books like Arihant/MTG.

When do I qualify? 

Based on the performances of the students, a merit list will be prepared, and seats will be filled in strict adherence to the merit list. There’s no fixed  ‘Qualifying Score’ as such for BITSAT exam. Cutoff scores are qualifying marks and they vary for the various campuses as well as for each individual degree program. However, the minimum marks for admission to any campus, with any degree programme are generally in the range of 290-300.

What colleges do I get through BITSAT 2017? 

The three BITS campuses will be providing admissions via BITSAT 2017. These are:

• BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus

• BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus

A doubt that commonly arises in rankers’ mind is: should they choose BITS or NITs? Here are some pointers to help them take a decision:

Choosing BITS over NITs-

1. The quality of students is better in BITS because the admissions are purely merit-based; there are no reservations whatsoever. However, reservation is quite prevalent in NITs. There is State Quota where students from state board get more preference in that state’s NIT over those from central boards. Also, a number of seats are reserved for OBC or SC/ST students, which lowers the overall student quality in NITs.
2. BITS provides the gift of freedom to students with no compulsory attendance, which gives them enough time to invest in all fields of their interests.
3. The institution has a better pedagogic system and academic flexibility. You have the option of a dual degree, which helps pursue both science and engineering together.
4. BITS has a better international reputation, thus offers a scope of high salary packages. BITS also produces some of the finest entrepreneurs in India.

Choosing NITs over BITS-

1. If you talk about value for money, NITs totally outstrip BITS. BITS is a private college, while NITs are government-run colleges. While you have to spend lakhs for your education in BITS, you can do the same with less than half that cost, with almost equal output, in NITs.
2. Curriculum for engineering is wider in NITs, which, in turn, makes you a better candidate for core technical jobs.
3. Better overall placement scenario is observed in NITs. The grading system is also better in NITs as compared to BITS. If you put in the same efforts, you’ll fetch a better CGPA in NITs as compared to that in BITS.
4. NITs have an illustrious alumni base compared to BITS. And alumni indeed play an important role in the ranking and development of any college.
