About Joint UGC Test for Junior Research Fellowship & Lecturership
National Eligibility Test, abbreviated as NET, is a national-level exam designed with a purpose of scrutinizing the candidates’ knowledge required for holding the position of Lecturers/Professors/ Associates/ Research Fellows at Indian varsities & colleges. CBSE UGC NET Exam is conducted specifically to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor both in Indian Universities and Colleges. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
You can appear the CBSE UGC NET to fulfill either of the following aims:
- Prove your eligibility for Lecturer or Assistant/Associate Professorship
- Prove your eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship
- Prove your eligibility for both Lecturer and/or Research Fellowship
Eligibility – NET
i) Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) (50% marks for SC/ST/PH/VH) in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences, Computer Applications, Electronic Sciences etc. are eligible for this test.
(ii) Candidates who are in the final year or have appeared for Master’s degree or equivalent examination can also apply for the test. However, such candidates will be considered eligible for JRF/LS only after they have passed the Master’s Degree examination or equivalent with atleast 55% (50% marks for SC/ST/PH/VH) marks. These candidates must complete their P.G. degree examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.
(iii) The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination were completed by 19th September, 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for relaxation of 5% of marks(i.e. from 55% to 50%) to appear in NET Examination.
(iv) Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their Post Graduation only. The candidates whose PG subjects is not covered in the list of subjects provided by UGC, may appear in the subject related to the one they had at PG.

Applications are filled up online. Exam is conducted offline (pen and paper based test)
Who can apply?
Those who completed or soon to complete Masters (Post graduation) with minimum:
- 55% for unreserved category
- 50% for SC, ST, OBC and PH
Scheme Of the Test
The Test will consist of three papers.
- There are no interviews
- There is no descriptive paper
- Only three MCQ papers on same day
Paper – I will consist of 60 multiple choice questions of two mark each will be given, out of which the candidate would be required to answer any 50 questions. The paper shall be of general nature intended to assess the teaching / research aptitude of the candidate. It is designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension and divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate. In the event of the candidate attempting more than fifty questions, the first fifty questions attempted by the candidate would be evaluated. Total Marks of Paper-I will be 100.
Paper-II will consist of 50 objective type questions, of 2 marks each, all of which are compulsory, based on the subject selected by the candidate. The candidates will have to mark their response for each question on the answer sheet attached at the end of the test booklet. Total Marks of Paper-II will be 100.
Paper-III will consist of 75 objective type questions, of 2 marks each, all of which are compulsory, based on the subject selected by the candidate. The candidates will have to mark their response for each question on the answer sheet attached at the end of the test booklet. Total Marks of Paper-III will be 150.
