The National Law University Odisha, Cuttack would soon be announcing the CLAT 2019 Syllabus around the last week of December 2018 and also declare the official exam notification. Keeping in mind the syllabus of CLAT 2019, candidates would be able to get an overview of the questions that would be included in the law entrance examination. CLAT 2019 aspirants need to thoroughly look into the CLAT Syllabus 2019 in order to better prepare for the strategies.

As per the syllabus of CLAT 2019, students need to go through the subject-wise topics that would be included in the Common Law Admission Test. Once you get an overview of the CLAT 2019 Syllabus, you would know your strong areas and also weak areas where you need more practice. Furthermore, you would also get acquainted with questions and marking scheme and you can then strategize your preparation with the right study material at the right time. It’s important to get an outline of the subjects namely, Legal Aptitude, English, Logical Reasoning, General Knowledge and Mathematics.

CLAT Overview

  • Duration of the exam – Maximum time allowed to attempt the question paper is 2 hours.
  • Type of questions – Objective type questions are asked in CLAT exam
  • Medium of the exam – The paper is set in English only
  • Marking scheme – 1 mark is awarded for a correct response. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for an incorrect response.

General Knowledge & Current Affairs This will comprise the most recent events of the nation and some general knowledge
English (with Comprehension) Vocabulary, correcting sentences, Fill in the blanks, Comprehension passages, etc.
Legal Aptitude This would comprise questions about law, some legal maxim and legal propositions
Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) This would comprise basic level mathematics including Number System, Percentage, Time and Work, Profit and Loss, Height and Distance, Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, etc.
Logical reasoning This would be all about questions related to blood relations, syllogism, analogies and some logical sequences.

General Knowledge & Current Affairs – This section has questions about general awareness like static GK. Besides GK, the included questions would also be about recent topics and current affairs from the previous year.

English (with Comprehension) – This section has questions from English Comprehension. Students are also tested on Grammar, Vocabulary and Fill in the blanks.

Legal Aptitude – This segment is about students’ interest in studying law, legal terms and problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, there would be a legal proposition and you would need to assume out of the set of facts given.

Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) – This has mathematics from Class 10th and is not very difficult.

Logical reasoning – It has questions about syllogism, blood relations, logical links, identifying patterns and rectifying illogical arguments.

Jurisprudence – This is basically the theoretical study of law for getting a deeper understanding of legal systems, legal institutions, legal reasoning and their role in the society.

Law of Torts – This is a new common law development supplemented by codifying statutes, which includes statutes governing damages.

Criminal Law – This is basically a body dealing with crimes. It comprises threatening, harmful, or otherwise endangering to the property, safety, health and moral welfare of people inclusive of one’s self.

Family Law – It will include questions about marriage, adoption, domestic partnership, paternity, child custody, surrogacy and juvenile law.

International Law – This is basically a set of rules regarded and established as binding in relations between states and between nations. It also acts as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations.

Property Law – Property law is basically the area of law that deals with the various forms of ownership and tenancy in real property and in personal property, within the common law legal system.

Intellectual Property Law – It has the rules about securing and enforcing legal rights to inventions, designs, and artistic works. Just like the law protects ownership of personal property and real estate, it also does the same by protecting the exclusive control of intangible assets.

Law of Contracts – This is a contract agreement between two or more parties in order to perform a service, commit to an act or offer a product and is enforceable by law. There are numerous types of contracts, and all of them have specific terms and conditions. The law that governs the same can be simply defined as the law of contracts.

CLAT Syllabus 2019 – Core Points

  • All the aspiring candidates of CLAT 2019 for undergraduate programmes would have to give a test on a total of 200 marks, while candidates of postgraduate programmes would need to have a test on 150 marks.
  • CLAT 2019 would be conducted in the online mode.
  • Every question would have 1 mark each.
  • This includes questions would be objective in nature where the students would need to choose one option out of the four options given.
  • There would be negative marking involved of 0.25 marks and 0 marks would be given to non-attempted questions.
