Courses Offered in BITS colleges:
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani popularly known as BITS is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university as well. It stands as a top ranked Engineering and B-School in India. The institute was first established in the year 1964 and slowly grew into a national university from a regional engineering college, with a backing by G.D.Birla. Other than Pilani, BITS has centers at Goa (established in 2004), Hyderabad (established in 2008) and Dubai (established in 2000).
Admission to BITS is based on merit. There is an all-India computerized competitive entrance examination called BITSAT (BITS Admission Test). The exam tests the candidate’s knowledge, reasoning and analytical abilities in English and logical reasoning, physics, chemistry, and mathematics, and is based on higher secondary curricula in India and abroad. To be eligible for admission at one of the centers in India, students are required to obtain a minimum average grade of 75% in physics, chemistry and mathematics (with a minimum grade of 60% in each subject) in their higher secondary examination. Admission to the Dubai center is solely based on scores in the 12th board exam.
Let us look at the Academics at BITS in detail. The institute has a 3-tier academic structure:
- Integrated First Degree
- Higher Degree
- Doctoral Programmes
1. Integrated First Degree Courses Offered in BITS: They are considered to be integrated degrees for two reasons: (i) the degree program includes several cross disciplinary common courses such as basic math & science and (ii) no intermediate degree like B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons.), B.A., B.A. (Hons), etc. is awarded. They are modular in structure and academic requirements are spelt out in terms of the number of courses studied rather than the number of years. The flexible academic policy gives students the option to complete their degree either at a faster pace (finishing it earlier than 8 semesters) or at a slower pace, later than 8 semesters. There are 4 main category of courses under this tier and will be detailed below.
(a) B.E. (Hons.) Courses Offered in BITS: These programmes in engineering are mathematics and hard science based and incorporate many up-to-date techniques of analysis and synthesis. The various courses under this programme may differ slightly with each campus.

(b) B.Pharm. (Hons.) Courses Offered in BITS: This programme has been structured to match the requirements of the Pharmacy Council of India. It also has an exhaustive exposure to various practical aspects of the research methodologies, instrumental techniques, emerging areas and industrial operations. There are also options for doing projects from third year onwards along with regular courses. There are sub-programmes to B.Pharm and it is standard across all 4 campus.
(c) M.Sc. (Hons.) Courses Offered in BITS: These are integrated degree programmes without intermediate B.Sc. degree. The integrated nature of the programmes and their analytical and engineering science contents give them an added professional character and equips students with the skills and problem solving abilities to participate usefully in industrial jobs.

3. Doctoral Courses Offered in BITS: The overall operation of Ph.D. programme is governed by the Academic Regulations of the Institute. Furthermore, the Ph.D. programmes are only offered at Pilani and not at the other centers. There are 4 schemes under which doctoral programmes can be done at BITS Pilani.
- Full Time Ph.D.
- Part Time Ph.D.
- Faculty development scheme
- Ph.D. aspirant scheme
A candidate is normally admitted to the Ph.D. programme after passing his/her Ph.D. qualifying examination. A few candidates may be admitted to the programme as provisional candidates before passing the Ph.D. qualifying examination. This provision is applicable to full time research scholars on the campus.
