Disaster Management Project:

A disaster is a serious disruption in the functioning of a community or a society, which exceed the ability of the affected community or the society to cope using its own resources; for instance, there is a widespread human, economic, environmental and material impact due to turbulent cyclones. The Red Cross and Red Crescent societies define disaster management as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular, preparedness, response, and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters. Disaster Management project for students can be a participatory exercise which helps build an appreciation for the challenges and complexities involved in Disaster Management and should encourage students to reflect and spur creative ways for solving problems. Generating Awareness about Disasters and Disaster Management

  • Teachers – Can organize meetings with the local slums/ clubs/ youth organizations with their students. Ensure that the activities are done in the local/native languages. Should encourage participation and innovation. Creativity in designing messages should be encouraged.
  • Students – Can design posters with information about what a disaster is, what would be immediate to-do steps in case of a disaster, how to evacuate people and how to minimize the damage of property and life, what are the don’ts to be followed. These posters can be displayed in schools for raising awareness among junior students, can be displayed in public places after obtaining appropriate permissions to raise awareness among general public. Little ten minute long skits can be prepared in local languages which can be enacted in front of local communities for raising awareness. Students can also enact these and film them to spread awareness.

Pocket Guide on First Aid

  • Teachers – Should ensure that students work in a group and get access to relevant material. Consultation with medical professional like doctors, nurses, paramedics, health volunteers, police, fire department officials, and the local unit of Red Cross can be organized if required for better understanding for the students. The prepared guide can be printed and published or distributed online by the school to generate and increase awareness amongst students, teachers and other people.
  • Students – The First Aid Pocket Guide can contain detailed instructions for aid that can be given for common injuries, fractures, burns, bruises, poisonings, dehydrations, and all other common mishaps that can happen post a disaster. There should be proper pictures in the guide as well. Ideally, it should have instructions in the vernacular language also.

Institutional Case Study on Disaster Response

  • Teachers – Teachers may select an organization/agency which works in disaster management and assign the students the same. The teacher can prescribe a format for the study and grade students accordingly.
  • Students – Students can visit the local organization/agency and gather information about their objectives, roles, background, look at previous work and programs and present this information as a study.

Role of NGOs/Government Organizations in Disaster Management

  • Teachers – Teachers can organize interactions and interviews for students with local functionaries based on their availability. Topic can be taken up by two students per group, or individually. Work should be divided equally in a two member group.
  • Students – Interview two of the following government/non government functionaries in your locality about their role and intervention during a disaster.

Communication Facilities in Disaster Management

  • Teachers – Students can be taken for visits to TV channel offices, All India Radio/ FM radio offices and gain information/exposure from the same regarding what are the possible manners in which news is collected and broadcast during disasters. The Principal of the school can issue a letter to the concerned Department of the Government/ concerned Head of the channel regarding the nature and purpose of the visit and issuing clarification regarding the purpose of data collection being only for project purposes.
  • Students – Choose one of the various mediums of communication used by the Government to disseminate information during disasters. Make a detailed study of how information is disseminated at multiple levels.

Models of Disaster Resilient Structures

  • Teachers – A detailed understanding of the matter is essential; the textbook can be referred to, and additional consultations for students from engineers, architects, urban planners etc. who have a knowledge of planning disaster resilient buildings and designs. They can also help in suggesting more resources.
  • Students – Layouts of models inculcating early warning systems and other improvements in buildings of urban/rural communities in disaster prone areas like coastal communities or in earthquake prone zones.

Preparation of Disaster Contingency Plan

  • Teachers – Teachers should help students prepare the contingency plan and keep in mind that the questions listed in subheading “community contingency plan” in the chapter “Planning ahead” in Class X Disaster Management textbook should be answered by the plan.
  • Students – A contingency map for the community around your home or school can be prepared. There should be an actual survey, with a social map, a resources map, and a vulnerability map of the locality should be mapped. An inventory of resources and a seasonality calendar highlighting various hazards prone seasons should be a part of the plan.
