The Office of The Surgeon General of Maharashtra state was separated on 1st May 1970, into two independent directorates namely The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) & The Directorate of Health Services.
Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) supervises the working of 42 institutions including Medical and Dental Colleges, Teaching Hospitals and Health Units under its purview in order to achieve optimum academic standards. Promotion of research in institutions are encouraged. Despite existing financial constraints, efforts are made to provide maximum facilities required for students’ education (Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Super Specialties), hospital services and research.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research, controls and regulates the administration of 11 Government Medical colleges and Hospitals along with Urban & Rural Health centres attached to them. It also regulates 3 Government Dental colleges & Hospitals. The Directorate supervises the Medical Education i.e. Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Super Specialization. It also co-ordinates the Research activities in Fundamental Research, Applied Research & Operational Research in the Institutions under its control and through Out-reach Services. This enables the Government to improve Health Status of the people in the society.
The Director is the head of the Department and is assisted by The Joint Directors. The Superintendent of Nursing Services is in charge of Nursing Education and works under the Director.
The DMER is the competent authority for Common Entrance test for admission to Health Science Courses (MH-CET).
DMER governs the selection of candidates into the Post Graduate courses for Medical and Dental. The selection of the PG courses is carried out in accordance with the rules and orders issued by the government. The Govt. of Maharashtra vide Government Resolution No.MED-1004/4256/CR-50/04/EDU-2, dated 7th October, 2004 had appointed Director, Medical Education & Research, Mumbai as the competent authority for conducting the selection and admission proceedings to the Medical Post Graduate courses.
Scope of NEET-PG 2018 for admission to postgraduate Medical courses for the academic sessions 2017-18 include the following of DMER Admissions 2018 :-
- All India 50 % Quota Seats for MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses.
- State Quota seats for MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses in Government/Corpo. Medical Colleges situated in the State of Maharashtra.
- MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses Seats at All Unaided Private/Deemed University and Minority Medical Colleges/ Institution situated in the State of Maharashtra.
According to the latest notice published in the website, Candidates of NEET-PG 2018/ NEET-MDS 2018 from provisional state merit list are called for Counseling & Document Verification and Online Preference form filling Process of admission to Postgraduate Medical (MD/MS/Diploma) / Post Graduate Dental (MDS).

The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra will not conduct any entrance exam for providing admissions to PG Degree/Diploma programmes in 2018 academic session. However, admissions to Maharashtra PG Medical 2018 will be done on the basis of Maharashtra PG Medical Merit list 2018 drawn on the basis of NEET PG results for Maharashtra state.
This year, NEET PG 2018 had been conducted from December 5 to 13, 2016, while NEET MDS had been held from November 30 to December 3, 2016. NEET PG 2018 and NEET MDS 2018 is a national level postgraduate medical entrance examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for admissions to MD/MS and MDS programmes, respectively. NEET PG and NEET MDS 2018 is applicable for admissions to postgraduate medical and dental seats in all government, private, central and deemed medical universities/ institutes.
Research Activities:
Research is carried out at all institutions as a part of Postgraduate training. Independent research is also carried out by staff members of various disciplines. Research is collaborated with national/international organizations. Research undertaken by staff members is presented in national and international conferences and is also published in national and international conferences and is also published in national and international journals. About 500-600 research papers are presented/published. Conferences and Academic Workshops are regularly conducted at various institutions. Major Additions to the DMER
- Medical Postgraduate Institute and Super-speciality Hospital is started at Nagpur. The Superspecialities available for patient care are Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology and Diabetology.
- M.R.I. and Spiral C.T. Scan unit started at J. J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai during 1997-98. Critical Care Unit – work is under progress at J. J. Hospital, Mumbai. Mammography facilities have been initiated at Cama Allbless hospital, Mumbai in January 1999.
- C.T. Scan Unit also began functioning at G.M.C., Aurangabad from November 1998. A 30 bedded hospital has also been started at Health Centre, Paithan. Work for Lithotripsy Unit is in progress in Aurangabad Govt. Medical College.
- Major constructions are done at G.M.C., Yeotmal. Operation Theatres, Hostels for boys and girls, Animal House, and also the construction work is in progress for Auditorium, Library Building, Dharmashala.
- Budgetary provision is made in the current financial year for the construction of 288 bedded hospital at S.R.T.T. Medical College, Ambajogai.
- Cobalt Unit is already functional at G.M.C., Nagpur, G.M.C., Miraj, G.M.C. Aurangabad and S.R.T.R. Medical College, Ambajogai.
- Advanced Dental Treatment Centre for all dental problems at one place has already started at Government Dental College, Mumbai and Ceramo-metal hollister laboratory for fabrication of dental prosthesis is expected to start within few months.
Maharashtra MBBS Entrance Exams 2018
NEET 2018
- NEET 2018 is the National Eligibility Entrance Test. CBSE conducts NEET exam on all India level. It is a pen and paper based test consisting of 180 questions where each question is of 4 marks. There is negative marking of 1 mark where 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
Until last year the following medical entrance exams took place in Maharashtra.MH CET Medical
- MH CET 2018 would have been the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test for MBBS/BDS. This is no longer taking place since the introduction of NEET exam.
Asso CET
- Asso CET 2018 would have been the Association Combined Entrance Test by AMUPMDC. AMUPMDC is no longer holding CET for medical admissions.

Eligibility Criteria
Despite the score in the examination, i.e. National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, the candidates will also have to fulfill the eligibility criteria for the Maharashtra Medical Admission 2018.
The criteria for eligibility to be fulfilled by the candidates is as below:
- Candidates must be a citizen of India/OCI/PIO
- NRI candidates are only eligible for institutional quota seats.
- The candidates must also be a domicile of Maharashtra.
- Candidate should have been born before or on December 31, 2000.
- An applicant should medically fit.
- SSC and HSC must have been passed from an institute situated in Maharashtra State.
- In HSC/Class 12th, the core subjects of candidates must have been English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

MBBS Marks Criteria – In Qualifying Exam (Q.E) the minimum marks secured by the candidates are to be 50% (40% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) B.Sc. Nursing Marks Criteria – Candidates must have passed in PCB and English. Admission Fee
The admission fee is to be paid at the time of admission at DMER. Candidates will be required to submit it through a Demand Draft (DD) from a Nationalised/Scheduled commercial Bank in favour of the Dean/Principal of the allocated College.The amount of fee to be submitted during the admission, at the allotted college, is as below:

Refund of Fee – If the candidate cancels the admission then the fee amount will be refunded to them. However,
- If the cancellation has been announced before the announcement of cutoff then Rs. 1500 will be deducted and rest of the fee will be given back.
- After the announcement of cutoff, no refund will be done.
