What is a Flipped Classroom?

A flipped classroom is an educational strategy. It reverses the role of traditional educational learning. In a flipped classroom, the teacher provides the most educational content outside the traditional classroom. Mostly the content is sent online and is accessible from home. It is a revolutionary new approach whereby most educational content is delivered via technology at home. Here students watch live or pre-recorded videos at home. The homework as is traditionally understood is performed at school itself. Hence the roles become reversed.

Importance of Flipped Classroom

Flipped classrooms are time-saving. This is because the introduction of any topic to the student takes place at home. They do the introduction and exposure of the topic at the student’s home.

Hence classrooms can donate much more time on exploring in-depth details of the topic. Students can avail meaningful learning opportunities in the classroom.

There are a much more efficient interaction and involvement of students in the classroom discussions. This is because students already are somewhat familiar with the topic at hand.

Advantages of Flipped Classroom

Another significant advantage is that teachers can dedicate ample amount of time. It helps in efficiently preparing lectures. This is because the lecture is often not delivered in real time but is pre-recorded.

This gives the teacher enough time to deliver a lecture with far lesser mistakes compared to traditional classrooms.

Also, they prepare the lecture in a very organized manner. It is so because the teacher has enough time and opportunity to cover all the necessary parts.

Also, they ascertain the order of the topic or chapter being discussed beforehand.

Yet another significant advantage of flipped classrooms is that it provides the opportunity for much higher memorization by the students.

This is because the student can view the pre-recorded lectures many times. This is unlike the case with a traditional classroom.

As there the lecture, once delivered, must be understood by the student according to their best possible capacity.

As such in traditional classrooms, the percentage of information retained is far lower than in a flipped classroom.

Further, at any time a student can stop the video to slowly understand a particular point.

Criticism of Flipped Classroom

First of all this mode of education is not suitable for people with poor economic condition. They don’t have easy access to computer technology. As such only the well-off people or societies can benefit from it.

Also, some students lack the necessary discipline to take advantage of this system.

Flipped learning relies too much upon the responsibility and wisdom of the student to gain knowledge.  People differ in their attitudes. As such some students may not even bother to open their pre-recorded lectures.

This method of learning is also challenging for the teachers as well. This is because they have to dedicate a significant amount of time outside of their regular teaching schedule to record efficient lectures.

Further, a significant amount of costs may have to be spent on teachers. In order to provide them with computing knowledge.

This style also has the problem of not immediately clarifying a problem at hand. This is because the relevant teacher is not available at the moment the student is watching a given lecture video at home. In this way, the relevant problem or confusion for the student may skip the mind later on.
