The Ministry of Human Resources and Development ( MHRD ), Government of India has approved the new Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Goa, to begin operating from July, 2016. It will be commencing it’s classes for its inaugural batch at the Goa Engineering College ( GEC ) located at Farmagudi, Ponda. Since GEC is an engineering college, nearly all the required facilities are, probably, available there.
A hundred and eighty students will be enrolled this year through JEE Advanced, 2016 for Undergraduate seats in electrical engineering, computer engineering and mechanical engineering streams to begin with. IIT Bombay will mentor this new institution.
The MHRD expects that the IIT Goa will function from the temporary campus for just the initial three years and is expected to move to its permanent facility by the fourth year.
“Goa government is in the process of writing to the Union government’s site selection committee to inspect the chosen sites for the IIT’s permanent campus. Three sites, at Loliem, Poinguinim and Mashe — all in Canacona taluka — have been identified. Of these three, the Loliem site seems most suitable for the purpose. By early next year, the site for the permanent campus would have been identified,” the TOI reported.
Last year, IIT Bombay, on orders from Union MHRD, had written to Goa informing it not to start operations in June 2015. The HRD ministry felt that Goa had dragged its heels on identifying land for the institute’s permanent campus.
With the latest addition of IITs, the total tally of this group of Institutions has reached 23. This year, new IITs will also begin operations at Bhilai ( Chhattisgarh ), Dharwad( Karnataka ), Jammu along with Goa. The old ISM Dhanbad has also been converted to IIT Dhanbad henceforth. Last year, two new IITs became operational at Palakkad ( Kerala ) and Tirupati ( Andhra Pradesh ).
