What is Grading?
Grading is a method of evaluating a student’s performance. It is done in the form of percentages, marks, letter grades, and more. Grades are usually given on activities like projects, assignments, tests, and more.

What is Assessment?
Where grading means allotting grades, assessment is all about evaluating those grades. To assess a student’s performance, the teacher needs some data. That data comes in the form of grades.
Therefore, assessment is a step further than grades. It uses grades to help identify the problem in the evaluation of his/her performance. For instance- A student getting grade ‘C’ in science is grading.
But, realizing the problems as to why he/she is getting ‘C’ is assessment. In other words, the assessment helps us reach the root of the problem contrary to grading.
Grading vs. Assessment
Grading is basically answering things in black and white. As the use of codes is made in grading, it becomes easier to grade. Codes are simple and do not require much work. They can be added up or recorded easily. They are a faster way of evaluating the student’s performance.
Moreover, they are also universally acceptable. Almost all students are measured on the same grading system. This makes it easier to assess any student from anywhere.
Similarly, each student is assessed impartially as the rules are universal. They are also very easy to understand from a parent’s point of view. Most importantly, grades assign students with actual objectives to achieve.
The assessment comes with benefits of its own. These help us to see through the grades. On the other hand, it also assists in classifying the weak zones of a student.
An assessment helps teachers to pay attention to each student in an individual manner. It does not measure each student on the same scale. It is a great asset for those who believe that students should not be a judge on the basis of their grades.
Basically, the assessment helps understand the thought process of students. It makes us understand what the student has finally learned and not his average performance.
The assessment allows for two-way interactions. It involves the student as much as the teacher. It focuses more on the student rather than the technicalities of teaching.
Assessment and grading are both beneficial in their respective fields. Teachers cannot function without either of them. There is an opportunity for both of these to exist. Grades are useful for organizations to measure student’s performance.
Assessment is useful for teachers to give them an insight into the student’s progress. That is to say, both things have equal importance. They can be used appropriately whenever the need arises.
Always remember to use them the most effective manner for fruitful results. In short, grading is beneficial in assessing large data whereas assessment works for assessing individual data.
