About IDC IIT Bombay
IDC or the Industrial Design Centre at IIT Bombay was set up with a vision of providing holistic design knowledge that allows students to not only become successful in life but also contribute positively to the society. IDC IIT Bombay fosters a sense of collaboration that influences innovation. Students in IDC are taught to think creatively and critically while not only maintaining their individuality but also by inculcating a sense of community development.
It aims at getting involved in thematic assignments that are of national interest and promote long-term interactions between academics, government, and the industry.
IDC adopts an integrated approach to Design Education. It aims to teach students how to solve problems and face challenges minutely and in a sustainable manner. For example, the institute boasts of creating an EVM by using Bamboo.

If you have a creative streak in you and want to channel it into profitable avenues, then this course is for you. This course will allow you to be in touch with new material, technology, and systems while gaining the much-needed expertise in the field. You will be trained by the best in the field in a very approachable manner. Another thing to note is that you need not be from Science stream to be applying to this course. You can be a student of Arts, Humanities or Commerce. Hence, if you think you are motivated and sincere then IDC is what you should be looking at.
Campus of IDC IIT Bombay
The campus is spread over 220 hectares of lush green land, which is rich in flora and fauna. It is located between Powai and Vihar and is at an hour’s distance from the main city. There are additional facilities like ATMs, Hospitals, Shopping centers, hostels, and activity center on the campus itself. Further, there are sports facilities for swimming, tennis, badminton, and squash within the premise so as to enable all-round development. The campus also has in it, an array of eateries like Nescafe, Descafe, Gulmohur, Upahaar, Srishti, and Ahar while Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Vadilal, Subway, CCD, RK are all extremely close to it. The college also provides library facility, studios, and laboratories.
Admission at IDC IIT Bombay
The admission to the B. Des is through the UCEED. The candidates who have qualified the same can fill the common admission form. This form can be accessed from the official website of IDC IIT Bombay. The eligibility criterions are as follows:
- Age Limit: The candidate should have been born after 30th September 1993 (for Open, OBC-NCL) or after 30th September 1988 (for SC, ST, PWD)
- UCEED: The candidate should be a rank holder in UCEED, with 2 maximum attempts in 2 consecutive years.
- Qualifying Exam: Students should have qualified in class 12 or equivalent examinations.
Some important points to note here are
- Candidates should have completed their qualifying examinations before the registration date and should have proof of the same.
- In case of letter grades, without any relevant information on the passing grade, the candidate must obtain a certificate stating the qualification.
- The same conditions and criterions apply to the foreign nationals as well.
Placements at IDC IIT Bombay
IDC students are in demand and it is very common for them to get multiple job offers before they complete the course. The placement office is well equipped with systems to support different placement stages like written tests, GDs, interviews etc. Companies’ like Microsoft, Cognizant, DE Shaw, Grail Research, Flipkart, Samsung, Accenture etc. are in collaboration with the college, thereby opening up profitable avenues for the students.
What is the course about?
This 4-year course contains the entire gamut of expertise in designing. Those interested and selected can continue to do a Master degree in the same field.
The Bachelor of Design contains the following:
-Art and Design Fundamental 2D, 3D
-Image representation and transformation
-Captured audio and Image design
-Design and human evolution
-Applied science for designers
-Design studio-problem identification, analysis, and creative exploration
-Typography fundamentals and exploratory
-Images and Objects

-Design environment and culture
– Design storytelling
It is project oriented and application oriented. The students will be allowed to choose a specialization like product detailing, photography, animation, advanced ergonomics, illustrations, visualization, typography, etc.
For a semester wise distribution, you can visit the official website. In the third year of the course, the student can opt for a dual Master’s degree that will require an additional year. Fellowships programs will be offered too.

Events, Workshops, Talks, and Clubs
The college has various students clubs like the scrabble club, HAM club, Hobbies club, Astronomy club, Speakers club, Wildlife Club, Swimming Club, Mountaineering Club, GRA, and SIGFIN. The college also celebrates various events like Matribhasha Diwas, Foundation Day, Typography Day and the like.
The college also organizes workshops like EXPO DMCI, Infodesign, Expo CD, ExpoPDi, etc. so as to facilitate interdisciplinary understanding.
Guesthouses in the campus: this is for visiting faculties, workshop participants, alumni etc. They are located within walking distance from the campus and the rates range from Rs. 250- Rs. 500 per day.
Student hostels: IIT Bombay has 2 girls and 10 boys hostel within its campus. These have to be booked in advance. The costs are Rs. 50 per day for the room, per person, and Rs. 25 per day for bedding, per person.
