IIIT Hyderabad: All You Need To Know
The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad is one of the most reputed colleges for computer science in India, competing effectively even with the top IITs. It has a reputation for being highly research focussed and supplements this focus with state of the art facilities. IIIT Hyderabad is located in the upmarket Gachibowli area of Hyderabad, which also houses major technology companies.
Admissions
Admission to IIIT Hyderabad is highly competitive, as one would expect. There are several admission modes:
- JEE Mains – Based on your JEE Mains rank, you can secure admission to IIIT Hyderabad.
- UGEE (Undergraduate Engineering Entrance Examination) – This consists of an exam and an interview conducted by IIIT-H. Through this, you can secure admission to the CL or CNS programmes.
- Olympiads – Students who have been selected for training to represent India in the various Olympiads (IOI, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, IOL, PLO) can apply through this. There will be no examination, just an interview. Through this, you can secure admission to the Dual Degree programmes.
- DASA – Direct Admissions for Students Abroad. This is for those who either hold a foreign passport or have studied their 11th and 12th grades outside India. The SAT scores will be considered for admission (both SAT 1 and SAT 2). The SAT subject tests attempted should include Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. There is a separate admission process for such candidates.
- Lateral Entry – As explained earlier. An entrance examination is conducted, followed by an interview.
Please note that since it is a private college, there are no reservations, except for the seats set aside for the DASA candidates, who cannot contest the other seats.
Facilities
IIIT Hyderabad has some of the best facilities in the country for those interested in studying Computer Science or Electronics. The labs are equipped with the latest equipment in sufficient quantity. The Lightning fast internet is provided to all the buildings, 24 hours a day. Since there is a lot of emphases here on pursuing research and projects, the labs are kept open around the clock for the use of researchers. There are customised Research Centres for different fields, such as Robotics, Security and Signal Processing. These labs are even sponsored for research projects by industry giants.
The library is one of the largest in the country, and as befits a technical institution of this magnitude, has subscriptions to a plethora of scientific journals. This means that any time you want to view a paper which is otherwise paid, you can view and even download it if the college has taken a subscription to that particular magazine. In addition, it is well stocked with reference and textbooks, technical reports and literature.
All students of IIIT-H are supposed to stay in the hostels, which are quite comfortable and equipped with all the necessary facilities. In the first year, students stay 2 to a room, which changes to single occupancy in the subsequent years. Girls may have attached bathrooms in the final year subjected to availability. In all the other cases, there will be common bathrooms. All rooms are connected to the internet and the local intranet in order to enable you to pursue research even from your own room. The hostels are equipped with a mini gym (apart from the large common gym open to all students), table tennis room, TV, library room, coolers, etc. There are four messes, including a common mess, and all the managerial work is performed by an indigenously developed IT portal. The canteen serves non-vegetarian food.
For the athletes at IIIT Hyderabad, there is no shortage of facilities for you. There are well developed and maintained grounds and stadiums for badminton, hockey, swimming, cricket, volleyball, football, basketball, table tennis, etc.
One interesting point to note is the RFID system. At all points of entry into the campus and the various buildings, the RFID system maintains logs of who is entering which building and at what time. While full freedom is provided with regards to movement, a close watch is maintained.
Academics
The college is very serious about academics and attendance. Missing lectures can cost you your grades! However, since the purpose of most students here is to learn and conduct quality research, this does not happen much.
The main difference between IIIT-H and other engineering colleges is the curriculum. In most colleges, the first year of engineering is an introduction to the different fields of engineering, where you study computer science, electronics, principles of mechanical engineering and so on. However, here there is no such concept. The focus is on your department from the very first year, with some foundation computer science or electronics course being covered. In many semesters, projects are included as part of the curriculum, so everyone gets the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge. As their website says, “The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers.”
In the initial stages of the programme, basic introductory courses are covered, such as databases and algorithms. In the latter half, students can specialise in different fields depending on their interest and take courses in those sub specialities alone.
Courses at IIIT Hyderabad
IIIT Hyderabad offers B.Tech programmes in both Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering. These are both four-year programmes. In addition, they also offer dual degrees:
- Tech culminating in MS by Research in CSE, ECE and Civil Engineering
- Tech in CS culminating in MS by Research in:
- Computational Natural Sciences (CNS)
- Computational Linguistics (CL)
- Exact Humanities
They also have lateral entry programmes, meant for those who have already completed 2 years of their B.Tech degrees in other colleges. These courses last for four years and culminate in an MS.
