IITs are considered as the “Mecca” of Engineering in India. It is the college-to-be for thousands of students across the country. Over the years to cater to the increasing number of aspirants many IITs have sprung in India. One such is IIT Bhilai. This IIT was established in 2016. Thus it is a very new IIT compared to it’s older counterparts at Mumbai, Delhi, etc.
Location
IIT Bhilai is located in the city of Bhilai in Chattisgarh state. It is currently housed in the 4-storied block-b building of the Government Engineering College. It will be shortly relocated to 457-acre campus allocated in the Kutelabata area. The current campus is around 30 mins(16.2 km) from the Raipur airport. The Raipur railway station is around 30 mins(12.7 km). Buses are also easily available to go to Raipur city. Thus, the campus is well connected to the main city to the delight of the students.
About IIT Bhilai
IIT Bhilai was established in 2016 by the MHRD. Currently, it is mentored by IIT Hyderabad. Prof. U.B. Desai is the mentor director. Sh. Vinay Sheel Oberoi, the secretary is the chairman of the institute. Prof. Rajat Moona is the first director of the institute.
Admissions at IIT Bhilai
IIT Bhilai admits candidates for the 4-year B.Tech course based on the performance in the JEE-Advanced exam. JEE-Advanced is a nationwide exam conducted by the CBSE board. It is a highly competitive exam. The format of the exam is a slightly complicated one with minor changes being done every year. The syllabus consists of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry subjects as per the NCERT syllabus of 11th and 12th standards. Currently, B.Tech courses are offered only in the branches of Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. For the academic year of 2017-2018 admissions for M.Tech and PhD. programmes have also begun. For the M.Tech admission first applications must be sent by the candidates, then there is a test followed by an interview in the subject selected by the student. GATE score is a must for M.Tech. admissions For the PhD. programmes candidates can apply with a GATE score. Then there are interviews conducted to determine the research acumen of the candidates. Then based on the past research done and the result of the interview candidates are chosen. Reservation of seats is done as per the directions of the central government this is because IIT Bhilai is a government institute. Seats are reserved as per the following norms. Reservation of 15%, 7.5% and 27% seats are provided for candidates hailing from SC, ST and OBC communities. The seats reserved for SC/ST students are not transferable to General Category and roll on to the next year’s students from the Preparatory Courses.
Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech and PhD. Courses
The Eligibility criterion for Ph.D. admissions:
Candidates must have ONE of the following in respective subject areas.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent degree, with first class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST)
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with first class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST)
- Master’s degree in science or equivalent degree, with first class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST).
The candidates must also fulfill ONE of the following additional requirements:
- Valid GATE Score.
- Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of CSIR/ UGC/ NBHM/ DBT/ ICAR/ ICMR/ ICPR or DST INSPIRE Fellowship.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience (acquired after obtaining the qualifying degree and completed before the starting of the semester in which admission is sought).
- CPI/CGPA of 8.0 or more for B.Tech. from an IIT.
In addition to the general eligibility criterion, the applicant must satisfy the eligibility criteria specified for the respective departments. Further, the eligibility criteria for financial support for the specific category has to be satisfied. Ph.D. applicants must also provide the details of at least two well-acquainted people who can provide reference letters in support of candidature of the applicant. At least one of them must be an academician and must have taught the applicant. Candidates are informed that an ongoing degree may also be considered as a qualifying degree provided by the applicant graduates before the Ph.D. programme starts.

- Download the application form and fill it up carefully.
- Send across the filled up application form to the following two different IDs separately for M.Tech and Ph.D. courses through email:

Note: The payment of application fees has to be done as per the State Bank Collect.

Course Structure
Currently, IIT Bhilai offers only the 4-year B.Tech course to its students. There are only 3 subjects in which this degree is offered. Of them, Computer Science and Engineering is the most sought one. One time fees for the students is Rs.3200, which accounts for student activities. The refundable deposit is Rs. 5850. The fees per semester for the General and OBC students is Rs. 104500 and the same for the SC & ST students is RS. 5400. The hostel and mess expenses are Rs. 24475 per semester. In addition to all of this students have to pay a premium of Rs. 750 for medical insurance.

FEE WAIVERS
- 100% Tuition Fee waiver is given to SC/ST/PH students.

Faculty and Infrastructure
IIT Bhilai being a new college has employed the faculties of IIT Hyderabad as Teaching Faculty. Subramanyam Kalyansundaram, and Manohar Kaul are some of the most prominent faculty members of the computer science and engineering department. Mohammed Zafar Ali Khan and P. Rajalakshmi are some of the most prominent faculty members of the Electrical Engineering Department. N. Venkata Reddy and R. Prasanth Kumar are some of the most prominent faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department. Over 65 faculty members from IIT Hyderabad are currently engaged to teach at IIT Bhilai.
Students are offered all basic infrastructural facilities, such as a library, workshops, computing labs and many other core engineering laboratories (digital fabrication Lab, chemistry lab, Do-It-Yourself lab, automation systems lab, electrical lab, etc.). IIT Bhilai is primarily a residential campus that is completely equipped with recreation-cum-TV rooms, washing machines, night canteens, regular dining facilities, etc. Students can also enjoy the Wi-Fi access available throughout the campus. The institute has well-maintained sports grounds and a multi-gym.
- Residential facilities offered to female students: Currently, the campus can accommodate around 80 female students can be as full-time residents.
- Residential facilities for the male students: Currently, about 450 male students can be accommodated on campus as full-time residents.
All the academic blocks along with the hostels are under vigilance by qualified security personnel round the clock.
