Placement Scenario

IITGN strives to inculcate innovative thinking, leadership skills and social awareness in its students through its heavily project-oriented curriculum. This helps the students to become industry-ready by the time they graduate. Career Development Services acts as an integral link between the students and corporate organisations. CDS provides a platform for students and recruiters to come together and explore a constructive alliance and believe in inclusive growth. Strong values and commitment, sense towards responsibility and positive attitude are some of the key qualities of IITGN students.

The placement cell at IIT, Gandhinagar came into existence in the year 2010, with an objective to provide career opportunities to the students. From the last 6 years, the Career Development Services (CDS) was able to attract dominant players from the industry and sector. IIT, Gandhinagar invites top-notch firms to its campus for the recruitment process. The Institute provides final placement to Chemical, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering students. For the placement process, it trains its learners through mock interviews, group discussions, and seminars and through organising workshops on various topics.

Interesting Facts

In January 2016, the Palaj campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGn), bagged the honour of being the greenest campus in India. The campus, built on 400 acres land, has been given a five-star rating by The Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment for Large Developments (GRIHA LD). IITGn has received an overall impact score of 25.9 percent. With this, IITGn’s Palaj campus achieves the distinction of being the first campus in India to be rated a 5-Star, the highest GRIHA LD rating, at a masterplan level.

Co-curricular Activities

IITGN has socio-cultural outreach programs for students. Sarkar is a weekly program designed to make the process of learning science easy and more intuitive. It has completed the phase one as of 2016 and is now looking at expanding. Nyasa is the award-winning HUDCO Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment 2013-14 program. It was established in 2011 to improve the welfare of the construction workers and their families in the campus(Know Why IITs Offer the Safest College Campuses for Girls?). Nyasa currently runs three schools for the workers’ children.

India Ki Khoj

India-Ki-Khoj (Discovering India) is an intensive program fostering the understanding and appreciation of India through lectures and field visits. Designed and led by members of the Humanities and Social Sciences Program, the ten-day program brings together IITGN students and visiting students from overseas. The first India-Ki-Khoj was held in December 2011 and hosted students from Caltech. India-Ki-Khoj has been designed to help overseas students understand how a tradition-bound and diverse country such as India has survived as a nation, and understand the many layers of that diversity. Through a combination of academic lectures and field-visits, the program takes the students through India of the past, present, and future, helping them relate India’s ancient traditions of philosophy, science and technology to a present-day India, and helping to identify continuities as well as changes that India has made through the centuries. The programs includes discussions of modern India’s economic trends, culture and history, poetry and films, caste and community structures, and enables participants to “appreciate a country that eludes easy definitions”.

Global health and development

Over 40 students from various institutes learned how to contribute to global health and development at IIT Gandhinagar in a month-long event called Summer Institute on Global Health and Development, which concluded on June 12, 2015. The event was jointly organised by IITGN and the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, with the support of Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL).

IIT Gandhinagar was ranked 57 in India by Careers360’s Top Universities in India 2017, 51 among government institutions. Among engineering colleges, it ranked 20h by India Today in 2017 and 30 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2017 and 78 overall. Careers360 has given it the second best rating, “AAAA+”, among engineering colleges in 2017.

In 2011, IIT Gandhinagar and the Physical Research Laboratory signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that ensures research collaborations and exchanges between the two institutions at the level of advanced Ph.D. programs in theoretical physics, astrophysics, and atmospheric sciences. The collaboration facilitates an exchange of research ideas between Ph.D. students and the faculties of both institutions.

NTT Facilities, Japan, and Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), Gandhinagar, have each provided a 10 kW roof-top solar photovoltaic (PV) system to the Institute. The system provided by NTT Facilities consists of sixty-four thin-film modules (rated 150W) made by Solar Frontier, Japan, while the system sponsored by GEDA consists of forty-four multi-crystalline silicon modules (rated 230 W) produced by Jain Irrigation Systems, India. Each PV system is expected to generate about 15000 kWh of electricity every year and reduce total CO2 emissions by about 28 tonnes. These systems have already started to reduce the energy bills of the Institute and are being used for research in collaboration with Underwriters Laboratories.

The B.Tech, M.Tech, MA, MSc and PhD programs are residential programs, and therefore, IIT Gandhinagar provides residential facilities for all students. Accommodation is offered in six different hostels, namely: Aibaan, Beauki, Chimair, Duven, Emiet, and Firpeal.

IIT Gandhinagar believes in ownership of campus by the students. All hostels are managed by students through the hostel maintenance committee. In each hostel, a resident caretaker follows up on all routine maintenance issues, and the warden is ultimately responsible for hostel administration. Each student is issued basic furniture including a chair, study table, cot and mattress at the beginning of the academic year. Students in all hostels have access to a common room, laundry and canteen facilities within their respective hostels.

In addition, there are pantries in each floor of the hostels which have refrigerators, microwave ovens and induction stoves. There is a general store within the hostel premises to provide the students with basic necessities like stationary, toiletries and snacks.

College Festivals

IITGN celebrates a festival every two months. In late September or early October, it has the technical summit AMALTHEA followed in November by JASHN, the intra-college cult-fest. This culminates in BLITHCHRON, the highly regarded cultural festival and the show-stopping HALLA BOL, which is the intra-college sports-fest. Add to that “infy” clubs like Music club, Dance club, Coding club, Business club, Photography club et al and what you have is a jam-packed extra-curricular calendar.

Don’t be surprised to see students huddled up in the cozy little common rooms, pooling their knowledge in preparation for the T20s, ODIs, and Tests of the IIT Universe: quizzes, mid sem, and end sem. This phenomenon becomes quite frequent on the eve of various matches.

Offering unmatched innovations in curriculum, IIT Gandhinagar is truly committed to promoting excellence and the development of nuanced minds.
