IIT Indore – All You Need to Know

Indian Institute of Technology, Indore, located in Madhya Pradesh, is an institute of national importance established by the Government of India in the year 2009. It is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. IIT Indore runs with the motto saying, Knowledge is for the well-being of everyone.”


The admission at IIT-Indore is a two-step process. One needs to qualify JEE (Main) and then take JEE (Advanced). Admissions are based on the JEE (Advanced) rank.

The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) is a common admission test for students seeking admission to undergraduate programs of all IITs. To be eligible to write JEE (Advanced), the candidates have to first appear in the JEE (Main) conducted by JEE Apex Board, in the month of April. JEE (Advanced) is conducted by IITs in the month of June. Only the top 1,50,000 scorers in JEE (Main), which includes students from all categories (GE, OBC (NCL), SC, ST, and PD) will be eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced). The JEE (Advanced) will have two objective type papers. Each paper will consist of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Duration of each paper will be 3-hours. Question papers will be in both English and Hindi.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India Examination conducted by all the IITs to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Post-graduate programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, and Pharmacy at the National level. Information relating to GATE will be available through the announcements link and the GATE Brochure.

The Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (JAM) is an all India examination conducted to provide admissions to various M. Sc. (Two Year) / MSc-PhD. Dual Degree and other post-B. Sc. programs based on the performance in a single test and consolidate ‘Science’ as a career option for bright students from across the country.


IIT Indore offers 4-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programs in several engineering fields. Admission to these programs is through the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), and students are admitted after completing 10+2 schooling. IIT Indore has world-class research programs. The institute focuses on cutting-edge interdisciplinary research. Primary research areas in the School of Engineering are Algorithms and Theoretical Computer Science, Semiconductor Devices Physics and Technology, Si/SOI Technology, Thin Film Technology, VLSI/ULSI Circuit and System Design, Bio-medical Signal Processing, Manufacturing Process Selection and Process Parameters Optimization, Micro-machining and Nano-finishing Processes, etc. As in August 2015, IIT Indore led all the new IITs in terms of total citations as well as h-index. Abstracting and indexing database Scopus has rated IIT Indore as the top among the IITs.

Research at IIT Indore has been recognized at the international level, with the active participation in several key international projects and several joint collaborations with research organizations in Japan, South Korea, the Russian Federation, Portugal, France, Germany, USA and many other countries. The institute has been successful in securing 82 externally sponsored research projects worth over Rs. 220 million.

Presently, IIT Indore is functioning at Simrol Campus, Khandwa Road, Indore. IIT Indore shifted from IET DAVV campus in October 2015 to its permanent campus in Simrol which sprawls across 510 acres.

Putting a strong emphasis on safety, the institute has security department personnel that conduct patrols of the campus and residence areas 24 hours a day. IIT Indore security department enforces all regulations and laws—both of the IIT and the Country, working cooperatively with the Indore Police Department to dissuade incidents that may occur on/off campus.

IIT Indore’s central library emphasizes the use of Online Information Resources. The library provides its users access to nearly 3800 electronic journals as well as access to databases such as ACM Digital Library, IEEE XPlore Digital Library, Science Direct, MathSciNet, JSTOR, SciFinder, Taylor and Francis, WILEY, Springer etc. The library also provides air-conditioned and Wi-Fi enabled Reading Halls.


‘Fluxus’ is the annual techno-cultural festival of IIT Indore, held in February. It consists of several competitions, informal events, workshops and showcases professional performances and was started in 2011. A two-day workshop was called by Fluxus 2014, focusing on ‘eyebotics’, a branch of robotics, held in October 2013. Famous Bollywood singers like Sona Mohapatra, Aditi Singh Sharma, Farhan Akhtar and Sunidhi Chauhan have performed at Fluxus. Sunburn Campus along with DJ Julia and COD3D happened in Fluxus 2015. EDM artist Dualist Inquiry, as well as the famous Rock band Indus Creed, have also performed at Fluxus. Fluxus also works upon social causes.

Fluxus 2016 held in February 2016 was the biggest of IIT Indore till date because it was held at Permanent Campus Simrol.

Miss Diva, which is the gateway to Miss Universe for Central India is a flagship event of Fluxus since 2015. ‘Ferocia’ is the annual sports fest of the college.

The Student Entrepreneurship Support Cell (SESC) at IIT Indore has launched several initiatives to foster an entrepreneurial environment at the Institute, with several students actively involved in Start-Ups. In collaboration with IIM Indore, IIT Indore engages in several entrepreneurial/cultural activities such as the i5Summit.


IIT Indore was ranked overall 16 in India (ranked 3 in Teaching, Learning & Resources and 5 in Graduation Outcomes- Placement scenarios) by MHRD in April 2016. IIT-Indore team beat 15 top IITs stand first among all Indian universities at 38th Programming Olympiad at Moscow. The team was ranked 42nd in the world.

IIT Indore stands among the tier-one Institutes of the country. It stands among the top fifty Engineering Institutes of the country, at present. It is expected that it would figure in the top 5 engineering institutes of India by 2020, due to several factors that are fueling the exponential growth of the college, toppling over some of the older IITs, due to the installation of the modern infrastructure and laboratories, which many of the Older IITs lack today. It has figured into the finals of ACM-ICPC repeatedly for many past years and has a well-established coding culture. Some of the best coders of the country are from IIT Indore, with the CS undergraduates from this college in huge demand in the industry. The progressive policies here are also fueling a new era of research and innovation in the Asian subcontinent.


  • The college provides 2 hostels – Kshipra and Narmada with around 600 students residing in the hostel. Separate hostel facilities for girls are available.
  • The Central Library at IIT Indore has in its collection, more than 15, 500 books. ACM Digital Library, IEEE, Science Direct, and Springer are the online resources there in the library to assist the students further.
  • The institute has impaneled many top-rated hospitals of the city such as, Apollo, Gokuldas Hospital Pvt. Ltd., Greater Kailash Hospital, etc. to make sure that the students get all kinds of medical aid in times of need.

IIT, Indore facilitates excellent placements in top organizations such as Infosys, Microsoft, Accenture, Wipro, Cognizant & much more. The highest package at the IIT-I is Rs. 28 Lacs per annum and the average package being Rs. 11 Lacs per Annum. The students doing their PhD are supposed to undergo summer internships as a part of the course curriculum, after completing their third year of graduation. Stipend offered during the internship varies from Rs. 15,000-40,000.

For the B.Tech students, companies visiting the campus for placements include Microsoft, Amazon, DE Shaw, Flipkart, Snapdeal, AVTEC, Mahindra, Tata, L&T among many others.

Breaking the myth that established IITs fare better in job placements, a final-year computer science graduate of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Indore bagged a job with Google at an annual package of Rs 1.7 crore per annum, in the year 2014.
