Ah, the IIT Chennai! How many dreams come true, how many brilliant minds compete to get in. No matter what one’s perceptions of this IIT are, there is always a veil of desire about them. Amongst the best engineering institutions in India, IIT Chennai certainly marks its presence as a top-notch one. Giving a little more push to IIT aspirants, here we go with some facts you always wanted to know about IIT Chennai.
IIT Chennai: All You Need To Know
IIT Chennai was founded in 1959. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement was signed in Bonn, West Germany in 1959 for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. IIT Chennai was the largest educational project sponsored by the West German Government outside their country at that time. Several German Government-supported research programs like DAAD program and Humboldt Fellowships, still exist in IIT Chennai.
IIT Chennai occupies a 620 acres campus that was formerly part of the adjoining Guindy National Park. Much of the campus is a protected forest and is a home to chital (spotted deer), Endangered Species of Blackbuck deer and other wildlife.
There is a Heritage Centre in IIT Chennai, which exhibits photographs, documents, publications, paintings, portraits, products developed and other articles. Information regarding important events, laboratory development, visits of important dignitaries, Indo-German cooperative activities, and academic achievements of faculties and students are also included.
There are more than 8000 students enrolled in the institute where over 550 faculties and 1250 staff are employed. It is indeed an honour and privilege to study in IIT Chennai, which has been recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.
Organisation and Administration
The Senate comprises all professors of the Institute and decides its academic policy. It controls and approves the curriculum, courses, examinations, and results. It appoints committees to examine specific academic matters. The Director of the institute serves as the Chairman of the Senate. The Director from 2001 to 2011 was M. S. Ananth, who stepped down at the end of July 2011. As of September 2011, Bhaskar Ramamurthi has taken over as Director.
Three Senate Sub-Committees – The Board of Academic Research, The Board of Academic Courses and The Board of Students – help in academic administration and in the operations of the Institute. The Finance Committee advises on matters of financial policy, while the Building and Works Committee advises on buildings and infrastructure. The Board of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research addresses industrial consultancy and the Library Advisory Committee oversees library matters.

Campus Overview
IIT Chennai is situated on Sardar Patel Road and is flanked by Adyar, Taramani and Velachery. The campus is opposite the Central Leather Research Institute and Anna University. It is spread over 250 hectares of lush green forest, which is midway between the Chennai Airport and Central Railway station, and is well connected by buses and local trains.
The Institute in itself is located around 2.5 km inside the campus. Two parallel roads, Bonn Avenue and Delhi avenue, lead you through the residential zone, under a canopy of green, to Gajendra Circle (otherwise called GC) and the administrative block. Buses ply between the gate and other locations on the campus at regular intervals. Named after mountains, the IITM buses take you to the GC, academic zone and hostels (named after rivers) for a nominal fare. This has in fact led to the joke that IIT is the land of moving mountains and stationary rivers!

College Festivals: Saarang and Shastra
Saarang, one of the largest of its kinds in India, is the annual cultural festivals of IITM and organized by the students of IIT Chennai. It is usually held during the last week of January every year. The entire event is organized by the students, which gives them an opportunity to learn. This five-day festival is attended by a large number of students from colleges all across South India.
Shaastra is the annual Tech. festival of IITM. But what makes it so unique is that it was the first certified ISO 9001:2000 students festival in the world with thousands of national and international students racking their brains to show how much of a geek they can really be. But this is actually no joke, as most of the IIT Madras alumni have actually gone on to do great things. E.g.- Kris Gopalakrishnan (co-founder of Infosys and President of Confederation of Indian Industry(CII)).
Both are one of its kinds and gather a massive footfall from all over.
Notable Personalities from IITM
IITM has been known to produce exceptional talents. Some of the notable alumni of IIT Madras are Anand Rajaraman who is the founder of Junglee.com and is heading Kosmix.com, Arvind Ragunathan, MD of Deutsche Bank and B. Muthuraman, MD of TATA Steels, to name a few.
Life at IIT Chennai
When you are at IIT Chennai, you enjoy a lot of privileges apart from quality study and atmosphere. The education at IIT Madras like most other IITs is not just about mugging up books, but to instill a more practical approach. This is the reason why students from IIT Chennai make it big. The atmosphere at the institute motivates the student to not only do better in their academics, but also hone their entrepreneurial skills. During their stay at IIT M, the students are exposed to several experiences which become inspirational and motivational for them.
The lingo used at IITM is very cool and peppy. “Put” is to do and “pack” is not do something. The students use “cup” for failure as the letter “U”, which is the failing grade, resembles a cup.
5 Mind-Blowing Facts About IIT Chennai
