Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to expand the reach and enhance the quality of technical education in the country. This article is on IIT Ropar.
The institute was established in 2008. On July 23, 2008, IIT Ropar started functioning from its temporary campus at IIT Delhi. This institute is committed to providing state-of-the-art technical education in a variety of fields and for facilitating transmission of knowledge in keeping with the latest developments in pedagogy.
These two areas of focus will enable students to gain exposure to recent trends in their chosen domains of study and gain practical experience through a wide variety of activities the institute facilitates in its own campus and arranges for in collaboration with industry and other institutes. Campus & Location
IIT Ropar is located at Rupnagar town of the district Rupnagar. The Rupnagar town was known as Ropar initially. The district has rich historical and religious significance.
Rupnagar town is the headquarters of district Rupnagar and is located 42 km. from Chandigarh, the state capital. The Satluj river passes close to Rupnagar.
The climate is characterized by a dry & hot summer and a cold winter. The average annual rainfall in the district is about 776 mm with about 78% in the period of June to September.
Permanent campus
The location for permanent campus of IIT Ropar is Birla Seed Farms, Rupnagar. The Government of Punjab has approved about 525 acres (2.12 km2) land for the permanent campus in Rupnagar. Foundation stone for the permanent campus of IIT Ropar was laid down on 24 February 2009. The college has a temporary campus till the completion of the permanent campus.
Temporary campus
The temporary campus of IIT Ropar is former Women’s Polytechnic, Rupnagar. It has all the basic infrastructure to run Academic programmes specially designed by IIT Delhi.
The transit campus is equipped with state of art lecture halls along with well-maintained playgrounds and advanced laboratories to help students gain practical insight into the courses. The current temporary campus is a brief 1 km walk from Rupnagar railway station.
How to get to IIT Ropar
There are multiple ways to reach IIT Ropar. You can reach by rail, road or air. The nearest airport is Chandigarh International Airport. The distance from the airport is 52 km.
The nearest railway station is Rupnagar railway station. The distance from the railway Station is 2 km. The next nearest railway station is Chandigarh railway station. The distance from the railway station is 56 km. The Delhi-Ambala-Una railway line passes through Rupnagar and provides rail connectivity.
It is connected by road on National Highway NH-21.

IIT Ropar was ranked 9th in National Institutional Ranking Framework published by Ministry of Human Resource Development in April 2016.
Admission Procedure
Admission will be based only on category wise All India Rank (AIR) in JEE (Advanced), subject to the condition that such candidates are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their Boards in respective categories.
Eligibility
For candidates who passed their Board examination, the eligibility criteria for admission is 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST/PD) in their 12th Standard or equivalent
JEE Exam Dates
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the JEE Main examination in the online mode twice in a year in 2019 i.e. in January and in April 2019. The registrations for the JEE Main 2019 January examination will start on 1st September while the registrations for the April examinations will begin in the second week of March 2019. The exam dates for the January and April JEE Main examinations are from 6th January to 20th January 2019 and from 7th April to 21st April 2019 respectively.

About JEE Advanced
The seven zonal Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) conduct the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced). The performance of a candidate in this examination will form the basis for admission to the Bachelors, Integrated Masters and Dual Degree programs (entry at the 10+2 level) in the sixteen IITs (including IIT Ropar) and the Indian School of Mines (ISM).
The exam consists of two papers- Paper I and Paper II. Candidates have to attempt both the papers.
- Both the papers have three sections namely- Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The questions will be objective type multiple choice. The questions are designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.

Faculty
The faculty is pretty good in IIT Ropar. Everyone has a PhD degree as it is mandatory in IITs. Knowledgeable faculty and decent research is what you can expect at the Ropar campus. Overall the experience with the teachers is pretty warm and students love the friendly atmosphere.
Crowd
Just like all the IITs have a 10:1 boy to girl ratio, IIT Ropar is no different. Multicultural society has students from about 22+ states of the country. Educated, aspiring, quality students come to this institute as it is an IIT. Life on campus is too good. Classes, academics, cultural activities, sports, outings, industrial activities are all excellent. IIT Ropar has high learning atmosphere and strong peer competition.

IIT Ropar follows a semester-based credit system. Campus life
Hostel Facilities
The Institute campus houses five hostels: four for boys (Mercury Wings A, B & C, Jupiter and Neptune Houses) and one for girls (Venus House).
The hostels are well equipped for comfortable lodging and boarding of approximately 550 students. High-speed internet is available via wireless internet and LAN connections.
Institute has its own independent post office opened for the staff and students of the institute. SBI (State Bank of India) has a well operational branch inside the campus premises.
Medical Facility
The institute has allocated a separate building, which adjoins the hostel complex, for its medical facility. A doctor and a nurse have been appointed to attend to medical emergencies of the campus residents.
Sports Facilities
The institute provides several sports facilities. At present, the institute has a cricket field, three tennis courts, a football field, a gymnasium, a basketball court and two volleyball court. The institute students also participate in the inter-IIT competition, which is held every year in December at different IIT campuses across India, and other competitions.
The institute also has a Students Activity Center (SAC). It has a well-equipped gymnasium and rooms for different activity clubs such as the Music Club, Dance Club and the Fine Arts Club.
Central Library
The college has a vast library. Apart from textbooks and recommended reading material prescribed for each course offered at the institute, the library houses a growing collection of research monographs, reports, multi-volume reference works, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, and so on.
At present, users can consult more than 4000 books (available on shelves) and hundreds of journals (through electronic subscription).
Security
The institute has ensured that its campus and residents are safe and secure. To accomplish this, a security agency has been entrusted with the task of providing security to its personnel and resources.
The beautiful campus has a peaceful environment.
Canteen/Mess:
One canteen, one hangout spot (fuel zap), two canteens just outside the main gate and two mess are the socialising places in and outside the college. Chawlas, Lilly motel, Sahil hotel and HMT Resort etc. are few nearby restaurants.
Extra Curricular Activities
Societies & Clubs
There are various societies run by the student body at the institute to promote extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. These clubs ensure participation from the students in different institute level activities & competitions and prepare them for inter-college competitions.
The Fine Arts Club, The Music Society, The Dance Club, LitSoc- The Literary Society, The Chess Club, The Athletics Club, The Creative Writing Club, Science and Technology Club, etc. are managed by the respective student representatives and a secretary.
Zeitgeist
Zeitgeist is the annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar and is held annually as a three-day festival in late Feb – early March.
Advitiya
Advitiya is the annual technical festival of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar held as a three-day festival in late March. Its maiden edition held from 22 March 2017 to 24 March 2017.
Music Society
The Music Society provides performance opportunities and brings live music to events during the academic year. Anyone who has an interest in playing an instrument, singing or appreciating music is welcome to join.
In the Student Activity Center, is a music room with various instruments including a complete drum set, acoustic and electric guitars, and a keyboard.
Inter Batch Cultural Championship
The Inter-Batch Cultural Championship or IBCC is the inter batch cultural competition of IIT Ropar and was inaugurated in 2014 to instill competitiveness amongst the students. Dance, music, and art are included in the list of events.
